Why You Keep Over-Explaining Yourself—and How to Stop

EPISODE 1 | SEPTEMBER 20, 2026 | 14 MINUTES

You gave the answer. So why are you still talking?

Over-explaining isn't always about clarity. Sometimes it's an attempt to manage someone else's reaction, comfort, approval—and even the silence after you stop talking.

In this episode, Sandy pulls the thread between over-explaining and over-functioning and asks what might happen if we finally let a clear answer stand.

PULL THE THREAD

Sometimes we keep explaining long after we've already made ourselves clear. Not because the other person doesn't understand, but because we're uncomfortable with how they might respond.

So we add another reason. Another example. Another justification. We try to anticipate their questions, soften their disappointment, or make sure they don't think badly of us.

But at some point, explaining ourselves becomes something else entirely. We're no longer just communicating a decision. We're taking responsibility for how someone else feels about it.

That's the thread worth pulling: what would happen if we stopped trying to manage everyone's reaction and allowed a clear answer to be enough?

STILL UNTANGLING

The conversation doesn't always end when the episode does. Every other Sunday, I share what I'm still questioning, reconsidering, and trying to make sense of.
